East Lake

About the Neighborhood

EAST LAKE is one of Atlanta’s more historic neighborhoods. In 1898, a group of 65 men formed the Atlanta Athletic Club. The club soon realized the increased interest in golf, and in 1904, acquired the property in the “suburbs” of Atlanta to create a country club and golf course.

East Lake was a popular vacation haven for Atlanta’s well-to-do families in the early 1900s and continued to attract golfing enthusiasts who wanted to play at East Lake Golf Club, where golfing legend Bobby Jones played his first and last rounds of golf. By the 1960s, the golf course and the community began to fall into disrepair. In 1995 the East Lake Foundation turned one of the nation’s most violent public housing projects into a national model for community redevelopment.

Today, with its historic bungalows and cottages and convenience to local eateries, shops and transit, East Lake is a neighborhood that offers old world charm in a revived intown community.
