Decatur

About the Neighborhood

DECATUR has the honor of being named ‘One of the Ten Great Neighborhoods in America’ by the American Planning Association. Fittingly, residents frequently refer to the unofficial motto of the town, “It’s greater in Decatur.”

Originally called Dawson’s Camp, Decatur, GA, was named for American naval officer Stephen Decatur, who fought in the War of 1812. Decatur, the County Seat, was incorporated in 1822, making it the oldest city in DeKalb County.  There are eight zip codes for Decatur, GA.  The “City of Decatur” is identified by the 30030 zip code.  All other Decatur, GA zip codes represent “Greater Decatur” and are outside of the city limits yet still in Dekalb County areas surrounding the city.

The City of Decatur is known for its small-town feel, annual festivals, and friendly residents. The town square is filled with boutiques, restaurants, bars and coffee shops.  Here you will find  the historic Old Courthouse, where you may happen to witness a wedding, discover a book fair, or catch a summer lunchtime concert. The square is surrounded by friendly neighborhood streets with parks, swimming pools, tennis courts, playgrounds and local schools. There is also a MARTA stop in the heart of Decatur, making it one of the most walkable neighborhoods in the city.
