Kirkwood

About the Neighborhood

KIRKWOOD is a national historic designated neighborhood on the east side of Atlanta and traces its beginnings as an early streetcar suburb of Atlanta. By 1910 streetcars provided express service to and from Atlanta three times daily, and streetcars continued service along some streets including, Kirkwood Road NE, until the early 1950s.

Today, Kirkwood is a vibrant, diverse community filled with a wide variety of architecture ranging from 100-year-old-plus Victorian mansions to small bungalows and post-World War II ranches. Adventurous newcomers can live in such atypical homes as a renovated library, while modern homes update the look of the historic streets.

The business district on Hosea L. Williams Drive offers a burgeoning collection of wine and coffee shops, restaurants and businesses that cater to people with pets, kids and anyone interested in a walkable lifestyle.

Downtown Kirkwood has become what neighbors call “the small town in the big city,” hosting its own post office, newly constructed fire station, police precinct and public library. Residents also have a host of restaurants and shopping options in this diverse and trendy neighborhood.
